I'm in Britain by the way.

If you could say how much each cost is, like car, insurance, licence, lessons etc please. Also any other relevent info would be great.

(note: I know nothing about the whole process, so in the easiest terms possible plz)

Thanks a bunch!

  1. Getting a provisional licence costs about £50.

    Learning to Drive:

    ==============

    Learning to drive costs about £20/hr and the amount it costs you to learn depends on how easily you pick up the skill of driving. Typically most people need at least 40 hours experience before being comfortable for their test.

    The amount you spend on lessons depends if you have anyone you can find to take you out driving. If a parent or friend (who has held a license for 3 or more years) is willing to take you out, this can be done in their car (if you pay for the insurance) or what I would highly recommend is Arnold Clark's Dual-Control car hire which costs £9/hour.

    I personally spent about £500 in lessons (initially, I didn't have anyone willing to take me driving) :( and about £180 on hiring the dual-control car (my parents couldn't risk their car to teach me in) over the course of 6 months (working my **** off as a waiter to pay for it!).

    When it comes to taking tests, the written exam was about £30 and the practical was £50. After you pass your test (if you do first time, well done!) you will hand in your provisional licence and be sent a full licence by post, absolutely free! :)

    Overall, I would budget to spend AT LEAST £800 on learning to drive.

    Getting a car after passing your test:

    ============================

    Bought my first car in Feb. this year.

    Bought a nice 1.5L KIA Mentor for £400 (got quite lucky) from a private sale. You should shop around for any car around this price and try it before you buy.

    IMPORTANT: Make sure the owner of the car has the necessary insurance to cover YOU if you have an accident while testing his car! Most comprehensive policies cover this, but third party insurance is NOT enough!

    Insurance with eCar (http://www.ecar.co.uk) cost me £840 for the year (age 21, just passed test)

    Road tax (which you have to pay to have your car on the road) costs me £120 for a year and MOT costs depend on the garage you take it to, normall about £40. (mine was MOT'd just before I bought it so that was included in the £400!)

    So I would budget about £1500 for the car.

    Rounding up:

    ============

    Licence: £50

    Learning to drive: £800

    Car: £1500

    And finally, make sure you can afford the petrol! I currently spend about £30/week topping up, using the car fairly casually!

    Best of luck!!
