  1. Bohemian was a word used before Beatnik and later Hippie were coined. It refers to a person living in the counter-culture lifestyle.

  2. Well, Bohemia a geographical region of Europe (Czech Republic,) but Bohemian has come to represent a counter-cultural lifestyle which distains the establishment and celebrates what it considers to be "art." The Beatniks of the 40's and 50's were probably the most recent example of Bohemianism in large numbers. Puccini's opera "La Boheme" means the female Bohemian (who hung out with artists but wasn't one herself.)

  3. Besides being a native of Bohemia, it means a person (artist, writer) living an unconventional lifestyle, usually in a colony with others.
