  2. The On-line Etymological Dictionary proffers this explanation:-

"1457, Scot. 'gouf', usually taken as an alteration of Mediaval .Dutch. 'colf', 'colve' "stick, club, bat," from P.Gmc. *kulth- (cf. O.N. kolfr "clapper of a bell," Ger. Kolben "mace, club"). The game is from 14c., the word is first mentioned (along with fut-bol) in a 1457 Scot. statute on forbidden games. "

So there it is, a club, stick or bat from Scots derived from Dutch.

Sir John Betjeman the Poet Laureate from 1972 was noted for using the older pronunciation 'goff', until his death in 1984.

  7. According to wikipedia :

The word golf was first mentioned in writing in 1457 on a Scottish statute on forbidden games as gouf, possibly derived from the Scots word goulf (variously spelled) meaning "to strike or cuff". This word may, in turn, be derived from the Dutch word kolf, meaning "bat," or "club," and the Dutch sport of the same name. It is often claimed that the word originated as an acronym for "gentlemen only, ladies forbidden", but this is an urban legend.
