What does the word pwns mean?

The only thing I can tell is that it is teenspeak but no one I've asked can be bothered to define it or why it is used how it is.

yeah, it means 'owns'. It's used by tech geeks and started out from predictive texting. The fone mispells 'owned' as pwned. I think it started in London and crossed over

My gamer friends explained it to me this way. It means "Owned" which is what they would say when they beat someone in whatever game they were playing but sometimes they got all excited and typed it wrong and it stuck. You may also see !!!11!!! - repeated exclimations with 1's in the line which also means the person was to excited they didin't hold the shift down the whole time. Now they are added for emphasis.
