  1. i think the word downs is a holdover of sorts.in the british isles a lot of the training of thoroughbres is done in places like epsom downs,lambourn newmarket.and the curragh in ireland .these are public owned areas ideal for the training of horses and have alway been referred to as downs.i suspect that churchill just adopted the down to give itsself a little more class.

  3. I live in Boston,Ma and close to Suffolk Downs. I believe that downs refers to the feeling that you get after you gamble your paycheck away.Seriously, I don't really know.
