As you look out over the ocean it seems to move in ridges, high and low places in unison as it moves across the surface, the high places are the swells and as they reach the beach they are what makes the waves break and the water become turbulent.  Surfing the swells means they are riding the front slope of these ridges before they break on the beach.  Thats where surfers do their work at..

  4. Swell as in water refers to the surf as it crashes up on the shore.  The waves had a 4' swell or they were swollen up to 4'. the waves or swell can be measured in feet above what the seas are when calm.
