The general usage meaning is magic or sorcery.  It comes from an actual spritual practice.

It's a religion practiced chiefly in Caribbean countries, especially Haiti. A supreme God rules a large pantheon of local deities, ancestors and saints who communicate with believers in dreams, trances and ritual possession.

It is Lousiana French and it comes from two African words from the Ewe and the Fon peoples:

Ewe "vodu" and Fon "vodun".
