  1. Back in the 1970's I was told that the crosses stand for the motto of the town, "Heldhaftig, Vastberaden, Barmhartig", meaning "Valiant, Steadfast, Compassionate".  But according to Wikipedia that motto is much more recent, only from 1947.

    According to Wikipedia the meaning of the crosses has been lost in time.

  3. Either they refer to the 3 kisses Dutch people give each other when the meet :)

    Or, you mean the 3 crosses in the Amsterdam shield. They're 'andreaskruisen' , St Andrews crosses. No idea what they're doing there..You can find them in the Scottish flags as well.
