2008 MEXICO AAA RATING STATISTICS FOR USE BY TRAVEL & TOURISM AUTHORITIES:
For 2008 AAA inspected and rated 32,000 Hotels & 28,000 restaurants with the same
AAA rating criteria, 1-5 Diamond in North America - 3% of all hotels rated were 4 Diamond and .27% were 5 Diamond.
Mexico Statistics:
* 14% of the 581 Hotels rated by AAA in Mexico are 4 Diamond (85 Hotels) - more than any country in North America including the Caribbean.
* 14 are in the state of Quintana Roo, 13 in the state of Jalisco and 10 in Mexico City.
* 1.5% of the 581 Hotels rated by AAA in Mexico are 5 Diamond (10 Hotels)- a higher percentage than any country in North America including the Caribbean.
* Quintana Roo has six 5 Diamond Rated hotels - more than most states in the US & Canada and as many as New York City (6)
* Only two Hotels in North America that are rated 5 Diamond also have two 5 Diamond restaurants on their premises. (One in Quintana Roo and one in Las Vegas).
* 5% of the 642 Restaurants rated by AAA in Mexico are 4 Diamond (35).
* 120 Hotels and Restaurants in Mexico are rated 4 Diamond by AAA.
* States with the most Five Diamond hotels: California (16), Florida (9), Quintana Roo, Mexico (6)Arizona (6), New York (6), Georgia (5) and Nevada (5).

To be considered for AAA approval and rating, lodgings and restaurants undergo a thorough inspections by AAA’s 65 full-time professional evaluators. AAA first started listing accommodation information in its travel publications in the early 1900s. In 1937, the first field inspectors were hired, and the current Diamond Rating System was introduced in 1977.
