For those of you who were wondering if Mexico is keeping up with the U.S. in luxury tourism, the information below may be very useful for you. According to the 2008 AAA rating stats, Mexico leads North America in service, and quality standards for hotels, restaurants and attractions.

As North America’s largest motoring and leisure travel organization, AAA provides its 50 million members with travel, insurance, financial and automotive-related services. Since its founding in 1902, the not for profit, fully tax paying AAA has been a leader and advocate for the safety and security of all travelers.

2008 MEXICO AAA RATING STATISTICS FOR USE BY TRAVEL & TOURISM AUTHORITIES:

For 2008 AAA inspected and rated 32,000 Hotels & 28,000 restaurants with the same

AAA rating criteria, 1-5 Diamond in North America - 3% of all hotels rated were 4 Diamond and .27% were 5 Diamond.

Mexico Statistics:

* 14% of the 581 Hotels rated by AAA in Mexico are 4 Diamond (85 Hotels) - more than any country in North America including the Caribbean.

* 14 are in the state of Quintana Roo, 13 in the state of Jalisco and 10 in Mexico City.

* 1.5% of the 581 Hotels rated by AAA in Mexico are 5 Diamond (10 Hotels)- a higher percentage than any country in North America including the Caribbean.

* Quintana Roo has six 5 Diamond Rated hotels - more than most states in the US & Canada and as many as New York City (6)

* Only two Hotels in North America that are rated 5 Diamond also have two 5 Diamond restaurants on their premises. (One in Quintana Roo and one in Las Vegas).

* 5% of the 642 Restaurants rated by AAA in Mexico are 4 Diamond (35).

* 120 Hotels and Restaurants in Mexico are rated 4 Diamond by AAA.

* States with the most Five Diamond hotels: California (16), Florida (9), Quintana Roo, Mexico (6)Arizona (6), New York (6), Georgia (5) and Nevada (5).

* 30 Attractions in Mexico are rated ”GEM” these are attractions that are exceptional and should not be missed when traveling to an area.

To be considered for AAA approval and rating, lodgings and restaurants undergo a thorough inspections by AAA’s 65 full-time professional evaluators. AAA first started listing accommodation information in its travel publications in the early 1900s. In 1937, the first field inspectors were hired, and the current Diamond Rating System was introduced in 1977.

Using the AAA Diamond ratings, members can select from nearly 60,000 quality hotels and restaurants across the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean, quickly and easily, every time.

Sounds like it as you are asking for a summary.What  do you think it means?  What kind of comments is it making about the hotels and attractions in Mexico...positive or negative?  Does it make Mexico sound like a good place to vacation or not?  Does it sound like AAA recommends vacationing in Mexico?  Are the hotels as nice there as in the U.S?  Are there interesting attractions in Mexico?
