Question:

What does this check engine light code mean? P1520?

My check engine light is on for my 99 ford escort lx and I have to get my emissions done soon. I went to auto zone and they checked it. They gave me code P1520 - manufacture controlled - vehicle speed, idle control. Can anyone provide any more information on what this may mean? My car does idle a little on the roughside but other than that it seems okay.

  1. i have a 98 explorer and the check engine light went on too... we took it to several different places including the ford dealership. they could not figure out what  the problem was and this was around 6 years ago or so. they just took the light bulb out because it was annoying and it has been running great still ever since. so i wouldn't worry too much about it.

  2. I don't understand why people on here who don't have a clue try to answer a question. I also don't understand why people go to AutoZone to have a vehicle scanned. Auto Zone sells parts.

Having a diagnostic trouble code does very little to help you unless you have some kind of understanding of the circuit that has set the code. Without the freeze frame data that comes with the code, the DTC is pretty much useless. Also without some kind of diagnostic information and a multi meter, you are trying to shoot in the dark.

But you do seem to have a problem that is inherent to the 99 Escort that is easily diagnosed without the code. There is a rubber tube that runs from your air filter box to the intake manifold. Remove this tube and inspect it closely. Flex it in several areas and look for splits in this tube. If you have any, then there is un-metered air getting to the engine. In other words, air that comes in through here is not being metered by the mass air flow sensor.

You can repair this by wrapping the split area of the tube with several layers of electric tape. This is only a temporary repair.

  3. its ur vehical idle control.sensor..[.id say..go to where they tested it but it seems like they don't want to help...try a garage or dealer..people actually go to school to learn car repair...you could ask the parts dept if you want to try throwing parts at it and hopeing 4 the best
