What does this mean: Customer: "The food was delicious." Waiter: "Thanks, I cooked it myself."

Customer: "The food was delicious."

Waiter: "Thanks, I cooked it myself."

Did he say it as a joke, or was he being sarcastic and actually meant to say that my compliment was stupid because i was saying it to the wrong person? I was depending on him to relay it to the chef... but whatever.
