What does this mean and how do i respond?

i just moved into college bout a week and a half ago. about a week ago i met this girl that i've really come to like. i've hung out with her a lot the last few days especially at a party saturday night. saturday night there was another guy i know who was hitting on her a lot and she kept saying she wished he wouldn't cause she wasn't sure about him. i've therefore tried to keep from making any overt moves because it's obvious she thinks that's creepy. then tonight her and a few other people were in my dorm and i said something about a few guys asking me if she was my girlfriend (which was true). she kind of reacted like she didn't know how anyone could think that. i'm not sure, i think she may kind of like me but i'm afraid of blowing any chances i have with her by making an overt move. at the same time i'm afraid that someone else is going to beat me to her. my question is, what did her reaction mean? and what should i do about it and in general?
