Question:

What does this mean by death by loneliness?

I have lit a candle that I put under a sealed glass in a dark room by itself. I came back in a few minutes and the flame has died. I immediately assume that the flame died because it was all alone. (it was alive and died of loneliness). Using the scientific method, design a scenario ( from question-experiment-results-conclusion) to test my assumption of death by loneliness.

  1. I assume you mean your assumption that the candle died of loneliness and not just that it can happen.  There are two ways to test that hypothesis, I guess, prove it didn't die from loneliness or prove it didn't die (e.g., it wasn't alive).  These experiments are of course retarded, but I'll go with it. =P

    Test One:

Did the candle die because it was alone?

Place one candle in sealed glass as before.  Leave the room.  Place a second candle in sealed glass as before.  Watch it.  Use a timer and record results, if you wish.  To be thorough, if you have a friend with you, have him watch a third candle half of the time and out of the room the other half.  Obviously, the result is that all of the candles die.  Therefore, we have reason to doubt your hypothesis.

    Test Two:

    Are candles alive?

Get a newly-made candle.  Poke it with something sharp.  Poke it with something hot... cold, electric, whatever.  Record that it didn't move. =P  Alternatively, record candle's dimensions every day until you give up and record that it has not grown.  Therefore, we have reason to doubt candles are alive.

  2. Death by loneliness-being married to my ex-wife.

  3. unfortunately i don't have a source for this, so i can only rely on the words of my high school psychology teacher:

there was an experiment a long time ago that a king conducted. basically  what he did was have a bunch of babies be placed into a nursery but none of the nurses were allowed to touch them. just feed them and maintain them. what happened after a while was the babies died despite being fed and maintained.

so the candle operates the same way this experiment did in a way; without any "warmth" from another human being, ie being protected from winds etc it will basically extinguish on its own.

  4. No oxygen is why the candle died.

You grieve yourself to death when you're alone for too long

  5. " No you killed it by starving it of oxygen , and you could have stayed in the room and then it would have not been alone , i hope you feel guilty for extinguishing such a beautiful thing in such a cruel manner "
