  1. Au bal means more "to the dance".  Often during holidays like July 14 celebrations, most little towns and villages have dances which everyone attends, young and old.

La salle des fetes is a space in most towns or villages which people can rent out for parties or events.  It would be a dance hall in this case because the town dance is being held there.  You could also think of it as a community center or event hall.  Often in small villages though, its more like a large room with chairs in it.  They play bingo there, have public meetings there and yes, the 14th of July festivities too.

    Bonne journee

  5. "Bal" in modern french means rather a kind of country side night party where you dance in couple to the sound of a life band.

"Salle des fetes" means the room that the local county uses to organize parties. You can also rent this room from the county to organize your own party.

  6. au bal translates as a 'formal ball', complete with nice posh frocks etc.  salle des fetes translates as as 'party room'

basically the sentence means 'you can come (or go) to a ball in the ballroom

strictly it is not a 'ballroom' in the english sense, but for this occasion that is what it means.  The room could just as easily be used for a disco or fancy dress party etc. all  towns   have publicly owned buildings which are used to hold events such as as these
