This is for severe thunderstorm WARNINGS meaning that you should be prepared to have heavy rain, lots of wind (perhaps damaging) maybe hail marble size or larger. If you are pretty close to the big lake you might even get flooding. Hope this helps!!

You are under a severe thunderstorm warning.

At this point in time, the thunderstorm is most likely hitting you  hard!  I would unplug computers (get off yours now!!!), get away from windows, stay tuned to the weather channel and get ready to head to a safe place.

If hail starts falling, go to a basement or secure shelter just in case.  Even if there is no tornado warning.  Come up 10-15 minutes after the hail has stopped if there are no other signs of severe weather.

When a tornado watch is issued, do the same as you would a severe thunderstorm warning.  Look for signs of a tornado:

Green sky

Sudden silence

Funnel cloud

Rotating/nonrotating wall cloud (huge black cloud)

High winds

Crazy amounts of hail

A loud train sound

If any of these symtoms come up (mostly the last few ones), head to the basement or a secure place away from windows IMMEDIATELY.  Stay there until either a tornado siren is shut off or things end, but only about 30 minutes after things end (just in case).  

I suggest getting a NOAA radio, available at most grocery stores.  You set it up and it notifies you if there is a severe thunderstorm watch/warning and anything else.  If that goes off for a tornado warning, head to your basement, even if no signs of a tornado appear.  This is important for your safety.

Pets:

Dogs:  Take them to a basement or secure place with you.

Cats:  If possible take them to a basement with you.

FIsh:  Leave, unless you can take your fish tank with you!!!

Small animals:  You may be able to take them with you.

If you can hear or see a tornado:

Get to a secure place now!!!  Then go onto your knees and cover your head with your hands.  If possible, get into a bathtub or under a workbench and flatten yourself against the ground.  In a bathtub, possibly cover yourself with pillows or a matress.  Shield your face as much as possible!
