  1. That inidcates the guitar strings, but in line form. If you were to hold your guitar in your lap and look at the neck, the lines on tab correspond to the strings going from top to bottom.

    E|--------- (1st string)

    B|--------- (2nd string)

    G|--------- (3rd string)

    D|--------- (4th string)

    A|--------- (5th string)

    E|--------- (6th string)

  2. They represent your guitar stings. The numbers on the ------ are the frets you need to play. As you can see from this example of AC/DC's h***s Bells the lower E string (E) is at the bottom and the high E string (e) is at the top.

The order of the strings from highest to lowest (smallest to biggest) is EBGDAE or Easter Bunnies Get Drunk At Easter.

A zero on the lines means you play the string open. Just pluck the string.

    e|-------------------------|----------...

    B|-------------------------|----------...

    G|-----9-----7----------5--|----------...

    D|--------7-------7--------|----5-----...

    A|--0----------------0-----|-------0--...

    E|-------------------------|----------...

  3. Those just indicate the strings. If nothing is there, nothing is being played. You usually see them in rows of 6, one for each string.

    E--------------------------

    A-------------------------

    D-----------------------

    G-----------------------

    B------------------------

    E-------------------------
