I dont think this is necessarily a true statement for everyone.  

It means to plan for a future, or your future will be a failure.

   I, for one, dont want any idea what I might be doing in ten years.   I dont even like to plan my weekends much.  I love to float and see what I find in life along the way.

When you fail to plan, it is almost as if you planned to fail. No one ever succeeds accidentally, success is the result of planning and executing the plan, so if you don;t have a plan, hence you are evetually fail.
