In addition to the other answers, which look correct to me, the "funny looking u" is the greek letter mu, or μ, which stands for the Greek prefix micro.

That's 3 micrometers.  A micrometer is 1/1000 of a millimeter.  So, divide your 3 micrometers by 1,000,000 to get 3/1,000,000 of a meter.  (3 X 10^-6)
