What does this phrase mean? "trying to rule this out"?

  1. When you rule something out, you remove it from your list of possibilities.

    For example, let's say I had a missing apple. I wanted "to rule out" that it was on my head, so I would go check the mirror and make sure it wasn't on my head. I would "rule out" that the apple was on my head by looking int he mirror and seeing there was no apple.

    This is a very common phrase. Is English not your first language?
