It indicated that you can't avoid something by running away from it.  (it will follow you)

(The wealthy escaped from the city  where the plague was rampant, and secluded themselves in the countryside to avoid the plague...were dancing and drinking and sure that they were safe...until the plague came to THEM (MASQUE).
