  1. When first visiting the West Indies, Christopher Columbus thought the native Arawaks would make fine servants. "With 50 men we could subjugate them all and make them do whatever we want." This attitude led to enslavement, high-jacking, and murder. The Spaniards main goal was to prove to the royalty back home that the islands were rich and loaded with resources, mainly gold. Columbus took some natives back to show the queen, and when he came back with many more men and many more ships, they began a regimented system of slavery and punishment on the natives of the West Indies.

The quote, "Let us in the name of the Holy Trinity go on sending all the slaves that can be sold", means that Columbus thought he was doing great things for the Spaniards by enslaving the Arawaks people and in the name of God wanted to continue to do so.

This part of Christopher Columbus history wasn't included in the history books.

  2. This is a quote that needs to be read in its original context. Columbus was born in 1451 and was a product of his own times. He was anxious to make his discovery of America a political-economical success for his own country. Consequently, he advised that many slave labourers could be profitably employed to grow crops in this new productive country. He was living in the heady spice trading years.

His comment may sound offensive to our modern ears, but then, some of our own ideas are going to be equally discusting to the coming generations,
