What does this quote from "Cold Mountain" mean? (You don't have to have read the book to answer!)?

First he says Orion is just a name we give it, it ain't God's name, we can never know God's name for things. I understand that. But then he says:

"It's a lesson that sometimes we're meant to settle for ignorance."

What does it mean?
