They wonder much to hear that gold, which in itself is so useless a thing, should be everywhere so much esteemed, that even men for whom it was made, and by whom it has its value, should yet be thought of less value than it is.

  1. It means money isn't everything, and that we strive for more and more when what we have is enough. That we place such high value on material objects, and lose sight of what is really worth something in life, friends, family, memories.

  2. i have tried to decipher this clause by clause - hope it makes sense :

"All that glitters is not gold" [Shakespeare].

but what is gold without its glitter?! [it is useless by/in itself].

everybody wants a piece of it - it is so highly esteemed. individuals want to show off their jewelery & consider their self more worthy by the gold standard - by how much / how costly their piece is.

however, the gold piece has its value BECAUSE of the person who has bought/worn it.

yet, we forget about the Person, consider him/her less worthy, of less value.

Basically, why are we so attracted to (and blinded by) that glitter of gold, that wo/man is valued not for her/himself but by the amount of gold he has on the body or in the safe...

  3. Well based on what  have understand...And This is the first time  have read this...

It is about being materialistic of human..Gold represent all Material things, It is said Gold has a value on it because for Human thinks it's value is high but when you really think about it Gold is nothing more than a Face or A shield or merely a Display of ones fortune.

it is also said that gold itself is useless and insignificant..

Put it this way all the things we don't really need or things that makes us thinks that we are One level higher than a person..

  4. It's pointing out that it's a material possession.  It's pretty much asking the question...why do people desire gold? What makes it more special that any other kind of rock?  Gold in itself can't really do much of anything except just sit there and look shiny, yet we kill over it.

  5. It shouts out to us to heed it's call everyday

It is more precious than gold
