  1. ?

  2. There is an excellent explanation of this quote at this web site. Check it out because it explains why Tom talks the way he does.

And by the way, this is Tom speaking, not Gatsby, as mentioned in your other answers above.

    Good luck!

  3. I am trying to think If it took place in the 1920. He is going backwards.  everyone had Stables (or at least the rich) and as they went to the automobile they converted to garages. let me know if that makes any sense to you  Wasn't the main character trying to get into society to win the damsel?

  4. i've never read it but it sounds to me like he's the first man to go backwards instead of forward.

  5. Miss Ladybug is right on the theme of the book

But didn't Tom say that talking about HIS collection of cars and using the polo horses stable? Gatsby only had one car in the book that we knew of where Tom had a few including the yellow one

  6. It means to deliberately take a step backwards in ones growth.

  7. I think he is referring to the changing of times.  For instance people used to have stables...now they have garages.  Their stables have turned into garages.  We no longer use horses or animals for transportation.  He would be one of the first to go backwards and make a stable out of a garage.

  8. Gatsby is looking for meaning in his life. When he was younger he thought wealth was what he wanted and needed, but now that he is successful and wealthy, he realizes he is unfulfilled, mostly because he does not have the love of Daisy. During the 20's when the book takes place, the automobiles was becoming popular. People were literally making their stables into garages. Getting rid of the horses to replace with cars. Gatsby is searching for something, something other than what wealth can offer. He doesn't need the wealth or the garage for the car. Make sense?
