In my opinion, it is basically saying you do not let your past rule your life. Example, say your mother is a drug addict and your pops left you and your mom. You would not let those hard times take control of your life. You want to be different from those things that have happened to you in the past. You have learned from those hard time, mistakes, and defied odds to make your own path that may be different from the one that would have been laid out for you and your life years ago. You learn and move on. You do not dwell over the past and you don't let the things in your past hold you back. But that is my opinion, I am not if that makes sense to anyone else but me.
