  1. My favorite triple-crown horse was Afleet Alex.  He should have been a triple crown winner easily.  But, he got shuffled back in the Derby.  His run in the Preakness was stuff legends are made of.  Then to win the Belmont the way he did proved the test of a champion.  He was unlucky in a huge field of horses and showed what he was really made of in the last two races.  A truly amazing horse.

  2. I think it's Barbaro and GoforGin19 said it first. I too will always remember "Barbaro" and "John Henry".

  3. I know who you are thinking of Mel! Barbaro, not a day goes by that I don't think of him too. I miss that beautiful face, and believe it or not I miss going to the Vet School's web site to check up on him.

I know Barbaro will be remembered for his spectacular Derby run (accomplishments while alive). But he will also be remembered for the fight he put up to live. My only hope is that the Staff learned A LOT from Barbaro, and that they can put it to use to save some future champs. I know Dr. Richardson said he learned a lot, but he hasn't had another patient like Barbaro ( and I hope he never does, but that's a lot like wishing to win the lottery... one in a billion!).

ADDITION: here is a story on Edgar Prado I somehow missed, you might enjoy it.

  4. it would have to be the great john henry.....i saw him race a few times

and he always gave his best....

  5. I think you are talking about Barbaro.  I don't think there is a simple explanation of your quote.  A legend is someone who lived every moment of his life to his fullest, did everything to the best of his ability, and acted with grace and dignity no matter what the circumstances.  So, a legend is someone who lives according to the above description. He may be dead or alive.  To me, Barbaro was and always will be a legend.  He obviously was a great race horse but he also seemed to live his life while recuperating with pleasure - based on the New Bolton blog, he enjoyed watching was going on around him (especially watching the mares), had enough intelligence to understand that the humans were trying to help him and seemed generally cheerful until the end.

Edgar Prado said in an e-mail that was read at an awards ceremony that "Barbaro taught us that giving up is not an option". I am clinically depressed and frequently sucidal.  Edgar's statement about what Barbaro taught us has kept me alive many nights when I thought there was nothing else to live for.

  6. HOw they are rememered is what I think it is about.

    You're probably thinking of Barbaro

  7. A legend is someone who is remembered for what they accomplished while alive after they are gone.I'm sorry but I don't consider Barbaro a legend.True,he is a Kentucky derby champ and put up a valiant effort trying to recover from a catastrophic injury. He will be remebered but is not a horse racing legend. That honor would go to,among others,  Secretariat,Man O'war,Seabiscuit,John Henry,Ruffian,Citation and more recently Cigar.
