In my AP Chemistry class, which is basically the toughest class at my school, their are no Spanish people or African Americans. There are four white people (including me). The rest of the 35 person class is Indian or Asian. This same class ethnic goes for the other AP class at my school (there are only two AP chem periods in the school) So, what do you think this shows about American education?

  1. This shows that the Indian and Asian cultures study harder.  I'm currently stationed in Seoul, S. Korea with the US Army and I asked a local student why everyone in there grade is the same age.  He explained that becuase the country uses a lunar calander and that way every one in each grade is the same age.  (i.e.  1st graders are all 6yrs old, 2nd graders are all 7 yrs old, etc.)  So I asked him, "what if someone fails a grade"?  He didn't even understand the question.  SO I explained to him how kids are held back for not passing.  His exact answer, "Oh, no no no.  That is unacceptable.  That is a disgrace and would never happen".  Korean kids go to school all year long and half days on Saturday.  They are not allowed any electronic devices on school grounds and they all wear uniforms.  Strictness is the policy for education in this country.  It shows, just look at your classmates in your AP Chemistry!

  2. I think that says more about cultural differences than it does about the educational system.
