What does this saying mean to you?

I got a framed picture of a lighthouse with the following quote:

GIVING

"You cannot hold a torch to light another's path without brightening your own."

I'm trying to figure out if this means which of the following:

i) By helping another person, you end up helping yourself

or

ii) You have to help yourself first before you can help another person

Any thoughts??

first one because you can't brighten your own flame. somebody else does.
