  1. It's both a Chinese and a Japanese symbol. Japanese kanji are essentially borrowed Chinese characters.

天 is pronounced "tiān" in Chinese and "ama" in Japanese, and means "sky" or "heaven."

  2. 天

    Chinese: tian1= sky, heaven, overhead

    Japanese: amatsu, ten= heaven.

However, when used in combination, the meaning can change drastically.

Japanese compounds: 天気 "tenki" weather, 天皇 "tensou" Emperor of Japan.

    Chinese compounds:  ÃƒÂ¦Ã‚˜Â¨Ã¥Â¤Â© "zuo2 tian1" yesterday,  ÃƒÂ§Ã‚§Â‹Ã¥Â¤Â© "qiu1 tian1" autumn/fall. 天桥 "tian1 qiao2" overhead/walkway

  3. OOOH ; nice question..
