Originally, organic compounds were those compounds found in or given off by living organisms. Hence the name, organic. It was believe that these compounds possessed a special property called the "vital principle" that prevented humans from ever synthesizing them in the laboratory. Use reference books to figure out what event changed this notion. Even today, materials produced by living things are often called organic materials. What does this tell you about the elemental composition of organisms?

    Urea:

    "Discovery

It was the first organic compound to be artificially synthesized from inorganic starting materials, in 1828 by Friedrich Wöhler, who prepared it by the reaction of potassium cyanate with ammonium sulfate. Although Wöhler was attempting to prepare ammonium cyanate, by forming urea, he inadvertently discredited vitalism, the theory that the chemicals of living organisms are fundamentally different from inanimate matter, thus starting the discipline of organic chemistry.

This discovery prompted Wöhler to write triumphantly to Berzelius:

"I must tell you that I can make urea without the use of kidneys, either man or dog. Ammonium cyanate is urea."
