  1. Someone told me that it originates from a time when a man was allowed to hit is wife with anything that was smaller then the diameter of his thumb....but I believe that is a hoax.

    It is a point of reference or standard which is not necessarily accurate but close enough to be reliable and it's considered acceptable.
