My 9mo son just got a script for this on his left eye & I would like to know what he is seeing. His right eye is + .50 +1.00 097. We will be patching and he is to get glasses. What do the last numbers mean- the 097?

  1. His left is very nearsighted and he has a large amount of astigmatism. The right eye is slightly far sighted and has a minor amount of astigmatism. (the 2nd number) The last numbers are called the axis, the angle in which the astigmatism is ground in the lens. Everything he is seeing right now will be clearest through his right eye. The other eye he may just see shapes with no definition.

  2. a -8.00 is a rather strong prescription, the second number is the strength of astigmatism and the third number is the degree of axis that the astigmatism is at. Sounds like his eye doctor is likely patching his right eye since that is the stronger eye to get the other eye to strengthen.
