Hydrogen bonds between individual water molecules break apart, but reform rather quickly. Individual water molecules also break apart and reform. What does water break apart into?

  1. Water molecules are split into hydrogen and hydroxide ions during a process called hydrolysis

  2. H+ and OH- (this happens constantly)

    or if you add some electricity you can break it into H2 and O2.  (this is the electrolysis of water)

  3. Well, water molecules are composed of hydrogen and oxygen, so if they break apart, maybe they'd break into the original components that created the molecule...? Yeah, sorry, I don't know. -_-; my guess would be oxygen and hydrogen, though.

  4. Like acids and bases, water will dissociate into it's ions (OH- and H+).  This is what Kw stands for when you're doing acids/bases in Gen. Chem.  1.0 x 10^-14 is the concentration of both the OH- and H+ ions.

    If you're more into electricity, you can run a strong current through water and you'll cause the water molecules to break apart into H2 and O2:     2 H2O => 2 H2 + O2.

  5. 2 molecules hydrogen and 1 molecule oxygen

  6. Liquid H2O water is a quasi-stable material. It does not break into anything. Bond making and breaking just move H's around so they are "mingling". Some party going on in there! Kind of like a full dance floor where nobody is really assigned to anybody else!

  7. H2O + H2O --> (H3O+)  + (OH-)

    So in short, basically H and OH

  8. H2O breaks into H+ and OH-

    Another way of saying this is autoionization, where one water molecule becomes H+ and OH-. The H+ from this water molecule bonds to another water molecule to make hydronium (H3O+). OH- being left over but hydronium overriding to make the solution acidic.

    H30+ is synonymous with H+

    acidic

  9. water break apart into

    H2O become H+  and OH-
