What does wearning the masks means?

In Step Up 2, when they pulled the subway prank they had masks on, later in the movie the Jabbawokeez worn masks too, i know they always do, but what does is mean?

is there a message behind it, does it symbolize something, what is it ?

Wel, the JabbaWockeeZ wear masks to be seen as a whole and not just as individuals.

They wear the masks in the beginning of Step Up 2 just so the cops can't see their faces. Plus, it looked cool.
