"What ever"  is the shorter version now. It means that someone might not have done it that way but ( let say someone took a different way to get somewhere then you did, but  you both got there just the same) the outcome was the same. Its a way of telling someone that most people would do it this way but the way you did it isn't wrong either. Its like instead of telling someone "thats the wrong way to do that you should have do it this way"  you instead say "if thats what floats your boat"  you won't hurt their feelings....go ahead hurt their feelings ... ..tell them the truth.....even if it hurts. Thats how we learn.....
