WTC stands for World Triathlon Corporation, the owner of the IRONMAN trademark and a for-profit corporation.  It is a sanctioning body in the sense that NASCAR, also a for-profit corporation, is a sanctioning body.

Triathlon is a generic term for the 3 sport competition.  It's not an Ironman unless it is sanctioned by WTC, and they make money on it.

The Ironman is a type of triathlon (same activities, just longer distances).  It's the longest triathlon competition that exists (much longer than the Olympic triathlon).
