    Here's the deal. it stands for World Wide Web, but in an internet address, it is actually the Fully Qualified Domain Name of a specific server (or cluster of servers) in a domain. So www.example.com route to a different server (maybe on a different machine) than say dns1.example.com

    the fact that you can skip the www in a lot of internet addresses has to do with intuitive software that in fact fills in the www for you. By default www is the web server of a domain. it need not be on the same machine as the email server or the name severr or any of those. That translation takes place through DNS and through port forwarding routers.. etc.
