It's a slang expression meaning that basically you're a loser-y type of person who does whatever someone else (a boss, the media, friends, etc.) tells them to do.  We use it a lot here in the corporate world, too.  (Example: "That Bob is such a tool- it's so pathetic to see him trotting along after the boss."  Translation:  Bob is a lame brown-noser who has pretty much lost all self-respect in order to gain the appreciation of our boss.)  It can also be used to describe TV personalities, such as Ryan Seacrest, who basically are talking heads stuffed into fancy clothes they didn't pick out themselves, all for the purpose of appealing to the "mainstream"-thus losing their identity, assuming they ever had one.
