Question:

What dog breeds have fur growing in multiple directions on their neck?

I'm trying to guess at the breed of my rescue dog, which I believe is either a doberman or rottweiler mix. She looks almost exactly like this dog here, also an unknown mix: http://www.ohiogamefishing.com/photopost/data/500/80Jessie.jpg

One of her characteristics that I think may be important is the fur on her neck. She has a ridge coming down the lateral sides of her neck, starting at the ear and ending near her shoulders. Its caused by her fur growing forwards (towards her nose) on the back of her neck, and backwards (even upwards in a small area near her ear) on the front part of the side of her neck. This causes the fur to spike up in a ridge that goes down the sides of her neck. The effect reminds me of the hood of a cobra.

Any ideas as to which breeds have this characteristic? Is it common, or could it be diagnostic in helping guess her breed?

  1. That coat growth pattern is normal.  Just in some dogs it's more noticable than others.  It's generally easier to see in short-haired dogs, but they all have it.

You can see it on this greyhound

  2. Judging by the picture, that is in no way shape or form a rottweiler or rottweiler mix breed.  Judging by the markings alone is also a recipe for disaster.  I happen to have an AKC registered Teacup Chihuahua STud who is marked exactly like a doberman.  There also many other breeds of dog that have these markings.

Not being able to see the dog in person, the only guess I can give to you is solely by the picture.  The paws being very small well proportioned to the forelimbs and body, suggests a relatively small to small-medium breed dog.  The muzzle being a medium length and medium-large width suggest a terrier breed.  On an educated guess, I would suspect that you are the owner of a Miniature Pinscher / Terrier Mix.

  3. that's a puppy doberman.

this isn't that common, most dobermans don't have that i think it may just be a fur texture of her own uniqueness.

Like my chinese shar pei has fur going up on her kneck neck gives her the effect of looking like a lion.

  4.     Cowlicks are possible in many breeds but considered a fault in most. I have owned a German Shepherd and a Dobe who both had cowlicks on their necks.

  5. the rodie  Ridgeback

there is  2 more but I cant think of them right now
