I used to feed my dog pedigree healthy maturity. Now I know it's simply junk in a bag so I feed California Natural now.

So what did you guys who feed stuff like EVO dog food now used to feed?

  1. Before I knew better, I fed my dogs this grocery store stuff called 'come n get it'

terrible, terrible, quality food. Right now I am feeding Avoderm, the dogs seem to like it a lot and they are both gaining a good amount of weight, my vet said my rescue pup is doing wonderful on the Avoderm, but I am probably going to change it because it is a little higher in rice than I would like....I will probably change to blue buffalo (I think that's the name...)

  2. As first time dog owners we started my dog on eukanuba yuck!

Because we got the ok from the vet. He's currently now on prairie its made by nature's variety he's really thriving on it too.

  3. Wow you name it I fed it. Pedigree and Iams mostly. I mean with so much hype and marketing for these brands its understandable that people get caught up in it. When I got my aussie, I had not had a puppy in 13 years so I decided to do some research. Thats when I got into dog nutrition, and realized what a difference a diet can make for a dog. I will never feed grocery store brands to my dogs ever again. I'm also comitted to sharing my knowledge with others.

I now feed Blue Buffalo. I had hoped to get him on Orijen but it proved to rich for his sensitive stomach

  4. My family fed Purina Dog Chow for years - thinking it was a good food, then Pedigree, then Science Diet (also thinking it must be good since it is sold in vet's office), then Eukanuba when I was 18 and started feeding more premium food than store-bought as I figured - it is premium - this should work. They were on it for quite a few years until I

had a dog that reacted to the corn and wheat in the Eukanuba - I went on the net and found out about dogs and food intolerances and upgraded to Nutro Natural Choice Sensitive Stomach, and my dogs did well on this for years. Til recently - around the same time that M&M Mars -( the people who own Pedigree) took Nutro over, then my dogs started not doing so well on it. So Nutro is now added to my list above of dog food I used to feed my dog that I will never buy again knowing what I know now.

I am not happy with Nutro because of personal experience recently and what I have read online about possible issues with Nutro products that seemed to crop up once they were bought out by the people who make Pedigree. For years - I fed Nutro Natural Choice - and had no complaints- I even recommended it as my dogs did well on it. In the past couple weeks I noticed that my female Bluetick - usually stout but not fat, had lost a lot of weight and was skinny - especially in her hip area. My other Bluetick had some issues with vomiting, and my Shepherd mix (older - 13) was starting to drop weight, but all ate well and with gusto. I figured my Bluetick female just needed her thyroid medicine adjusted - that her levels had changed since she seemed to be acting normal save for the weight loss. I was going to take her in to the vet Monday and let her out - she didn't act any different, sick or anything, and we went to sleep. In the morning - I went to let her out and she had passed away. I took the body to the vet and they said that by the looks of it - she passed away from kidney failure. She was only 9 (Coonhounds tend to live between 12-16 years) but it could have been coincidence between her death and the Nutro issues but I didn't want to take a chance with the 2 remaining dogs. I switched to Canidae right away and now they are used to it and are doing well on it - the other Bluetick Dale (4) has no symptoms of vomiting or anything else and my older dog - Shepherd mix (13) has gained some of the weight she lost( not much) back. I like that the Canidae ALS is 44 lbs for about 50 dollars and it is lasting them a long time for 2 dogs - still a quarter of a bag left and they have been eating it for 3 weeks now. For snacks - I got them the Canidae Snap biscuits for 3.99 as well at the pet food store (independent - not Petco or Petsmart) . So right now I am happy with Canidae

  5. I've never fed my current dog low-quality food.

Before getting my current dog, I was a hard-core Iams feeder. The vet said it was good, my parents used it when they used to breed cocker spaniels, and a lot of other breeders we knew fed it.

When I went to pick up my current dog, the sire's owner (I met the dam's owner at the sire's owner's house) showed me how to choose good dog food. So I did some more research and learned how to identify what foods were good quality by reading the ingredients, not by the popular name on the front of the bag.
