i need a dog that can live on a farm or the city, because right now i live in town, but i might move to the country. My yard is good sized and i'd bring them to my grandmas house sometimes (her backyard fits 2 extra houses with garage, and yard!counting a regular yard!) I have one cat and one guinea pig. I want a protective dog, but not a aggressive dog. I also want a dog i can run with and is good with kids (i babysit). I was thinking of an Australian Shepard, i love dogs with thick fur, and i'm good with brushing those type of dogs.

Now can you list some things that i can do to convince my mom to let me get a dog.

  1. 1) Get a job: If you can help pay for a dog, maybe mom might say yes. Dog's cost a lot of money: anywhere from $100 for a rescue dog to over $1,000 for a purebred from a reputable breeder. Supplies needed in the first few days total to about $200 or more and the first vet visit may total in the $200 range as well. Monthly fees can total $100 or more. Emergency fees can reach well into and over the $2,000 range.

    2) Pick up chores: Show mom that you can and will do things around the house. Make a list of things YOU will be responsible for in the home - putting away dishes, cleaning up your room, cleaning up after yourself (should be done anyway), and other things like that. And stick with it, even after you get a dog.

    3) Make a list: Write out the things you can do for the dog, but also write out what you'll need help with. Be HONEST. Mom will need to help out - you cannot drive the dog to the vet, you cannot sign legal documents, you cannot stay alone with the dog for training. most of these things depend on age, of course. But you CAN feed the dog, make sure it has water, exercise the dog, help train the dog, and so forth.

    4) Do research: Know everything you can about the breed you like. Pros AND cons. Know where you want to get the dog. Know how much money you will need. Know how long it will take you to earn that money. Know how much money you'll make per month so you can prove you WILL be able to pay for some fees.

The biggest thing is to accept her decision. Mom works hard to pay for the house, the bills, for food, clothing, and to support you and herself. Even if you help pay, she may not want to deal with the stress of raising a dog. Show your maturity by accepting that - work hard to earn some money and prove responsibility, then try again in a year from now.

Keep in mind that at some point you'll be going away to college. Unless you stay at home, the dog will not be with you - dogs are not allowed in dorms and most places won't allow freshmen to live in apartments. The cost of an apartment may also be more than you or mom can handle as opposed to the dorm.

As far as what dog to get - take a few breed selector quizzes online and see what pops up. They tend to be spot on in terms on finding a good breed for you. Remember to keep mom's wants in mind - she may not want shedding or high energy.

  2. A good dog is one you can find in the shelter. Any dog can fit that description and have longer fur. By telling your mom you are willing to adopt, instead of putting down hundreds and hundreds of dollars in a potentially sick dog from a puppy mill or BYB, it might show that you have enough character, and be responsible enough, to own a dog.

    Good luck.

  3. Don't tell them, but DEMONSTRATE your level of responsibility by such things as taking care of your own room, doing your own laundry, doing chores around the house (dishes, garbage, cleaning, etc.), not having to be told to do your homework, getting yourself up in the morning, responsible grooming & dressing, improve your grades, and so forth.

  4. everyone says to clean stuff and wash stuff and do loads of stuff to show you are responsible but if your mum and dad are never gonna give in there is no point and you have waisted your time so ask them why you cant have one and then do what they think you cant do e.g if they say you wont walk it go on a walk everyday

  5. I have a white German shepherd. A German shepherd is a great dog for all of the things you described. They are a protective dog but they are not aggressive! My GSD has never been aggressive to anyone! They also love kids! Mine would actually prefer kids over adults but she still likes the adults too! A GSD would make a great running partner for you! They are very smart dogs that are easy to train, you also have to make sure you socialize them properly - if you don't you will end up with a dog that is afraid of everything:) GSDs do need to be brushed - they loose that under coat every spring:)

To convince your mom I would just start showing her how responsible you can be. You can always tell someone something but that doesn't prove anything - you have to show her that you can take care of a dog.

Hope that helps and hope you get your dog! Good luck:)

  6. i actually would not recommened you getting a chihuahua or a yorkshire terrier.

Both dogs, althought very protective, can become very aggresive & snappy, especially towards children.

have you ever thought of a springer spaniel ? this is a hard working farm dog, plus a good family pet, their energy levels are also very high also. They are quite protective towards children :) just make sure that you see the temprements of the parents before you purchase any dog :)

i'd try nagging your mum, i nagged my mum for 5 months before she considered getting our yorkshire terrier :) but i got what i wanted in the end lol.

  7. I know the best dog for you. You need a collie or a jack russel terrier. the collie is perotective and loves to run. A jack russel terrier is a active dog and protects. Although they are great dogs you may consider on getting one of those. Chiuauas are mean and crule to other small animals. But if you want a loyal and loving dog that is small and protective and active you may want to get a dachound. But a golden retreiver is the best dog in the world they are active, protective, and nice to little kids. They are the best breed.

Also here is what you can say:

ill take good care of it and clean after it.

Ill let it outside and play with it.

Ill brush it and make sure it is healthy and happy.

Ill feed it and water it daily.

And ill also let it sleep in my room.

I said that to my mom and now i have 5 dogs, 1 cat, and 2 guinea pigs. So i literally have 8 animals. And i love them all.

  8. You should get a long haired Chihuahua... They are protective, good with people as long as they are around people from the start.  They love to run and you can take them anywhere!

Another good dog is a golden retriever...
