  1. Labs are so sweet. My son is 8 years old, mildly autistic...and our neighbor's black lab is therapeutic for him when they play:-)

  2. Labs have to be number one because they are dedicated to protecting their family. We had one that absolutely hated it when we went out in our kayaks so she would jump in the water, grab our paddles with her teeth and try to bring us back to shore.

If you want a smaller dog, you cannot go wrong with a Shetland Sheepdog, better known as a Sheltie. I had one as my classroom dog for all the years of her life. She loved every child I ever had and had such a joyous and loving personality, that she charmed all of my students.

  3. A ROUGH COLLIE, THE MOST INTELIGENT DOG OUT THERE, [LASSIE COLLIE]

  4. I don't think there is an ideal dog ...in my opinion my twin son Thomas is nine and has severe autism, he is not really keen on dogs and finds them scary mainly when they bark or jump up him, some children can cope and live with a dog but for some autistic children they might not cope well with a dog, if you are getting a dog for a child with autism i would recommend taking the child to a place where they can see dogs and be around them say a relative who has one already or a dogs home, its all well and good bringing a dog home and it goes wrong, what will happen to the dog then

  5. Border collie. Golden labradors are also good.

  6. You didn't mention size so I personally i would have to say

Golden retriever, possibly the kindest dog on the planet. You could check with AKC to verify any choice. Good Luck.

  7. For a special needs child, you'll want a breed that is large and sturdy enough to withstand some rough treatment (hitting, hair and ear pulling, tail pulling, etc...)

It also has to be generally calm and patient in nature, to keep from startling, scaring, or exciting the child.

And it needs to be intelligent enough for fairly extensive obedience training.

The following breeds would excell at this type of therapy, but this list is not all-inclusive. There are also several other breeds that would be well suited for this type of work.

    1: Labrador Retriever

    2: Golden Retriever

    3: Border Collie

    4: German Sheperd

    5: Shetland Sheepdog

    6: Boston Terrier

    7: Saint Benard

    8: Austrailian Cattle Dog

    9: Austrailian Sheperd

10: Beagle - Standard, not miniature

  8. boxers are a good choice, i have one, i know lots of people with them, my kids crawl on mine, pull his ears and all kinds of mean things, he has never even lifted a lip to growl. labs are sweet but have lots of energy and can play hard

  9. I have a couple of jack russel terriers who are fine with my autistic child. There is no clear cut answer to this question as it depends on the child and the temperament of the dog. Usually Labradors are considered good placid natured dogs to be around children but I know people who have spaniels, crossbreeds and all different types of dogs.

  10. Both my twin daughters are Autistic and we had a Briard while they were younger. She is the most placid dog I have ever known. She very rarely barked (goes with the breed)which is great as the girls don't like loud noises. She allowed the girls to climb all over her and never snaped at them. When the girls went to bed she would lay out side the bedroom door and come to get us If they woke up. She was just so protective of them.

  11. 1: Labrador Retriever

    2: Golden Retriever

    3: Border Collie

    4: German Shepherd

    5: Shetland Sheepdog

    6: Boston Terrier

    7: Saint Bernard

    8: Australian Cattle Dog

    9: Australian Shepherd

10: Beagle - Standard, not miniature

yes all good dogs and will take to the task but in my opinion for safety of your young person i would not risk it a dog of any breed can turn on a person without notice all the young people who have been damaged by dogs read the news but they have never done this before sorry you may look at activity's with animals but to have one in the house no no if your child is bite it is to late to say i didn't or i shouldn't have the damage is done Dave
