The basic answer is nori (or a fine flattened seaweed)and vinegared rice. The part in the middle is anything from natto (fermented soy beans ) to different raw fish to vegetables. FYI  true sushi from Japan does NOT have avocado in it. Californian rolls were made so foreigners would eat it basically.

there are many types of sushi.  you have maki sushi and you have nigiri.  maki sushi are just rolls filled with anything and wrapped around in rice and seaweed.  the most common one is the california roll, which consists of crab meat (sometimes imitation), avocado, cucumber, wrapped in seaweed and the outer layer with rice.  nigiri sushi is a small lump of rice topped with a piece of raw fish (on most occasions) but can also be topped with egg or cooked shrimp.

Sushi actually refers to the rice. That's about the only ingredient present in all forms of sushi. Raw fish is actually called shashimi. That's not how you spell it by the way, it's just how it's pronounced. Yahoo spell check didn't have it listed.

Sushi is a very broad term.  There are all different types of sushi combinations. Normally they all have vinegared sushi rice and nori (seaweed) then combinations of meat (shrimp, crab, eel, tuna, salmon,etc) and/or vegetables (cucumber, carrot, avocado).

Anything from the sea and it is all raw, like fish, scalops, octopus, eel.  California rolls are sushi wraped with rice and some kind of leaf.  I would start there if you would like to try some.
