Hi what dose XD stand for?

My husband and I have noticed a lot of young people will type there message then at the end type XD.

would like to know what it means.

What I noticed about it was that with that 'x' it looks just like South Park's Eric Cartman's face....when he's whining, usually, lol.

the D is a wide open mouth.
