What dose it mean when you see shoes hanging on telephone lines?

Someone has died there. The 'tradtition' so to speak, is to throw the shoes up onto the wire that belonged to the dead.

I always wondered that myself.  Great question.  I live in rural eastern Kentucky and really don't see them in but certainly did when I lived in Chicago.

I always have heard that a drug dealer lives close to it....but thats just what people say.  It is probably just some kids throwing a pair of shoes up there!!!

back in the day it used to mean it was a drug dealers house, but law enforcement caught on so people usually just do it for fun now, it doesn't mean anything that i know of
