What dramatic device is used to stop something happening?

Question

i.e. stop someone in the middle of a monologue, or just as a character in a play is about to do something but is stopped by something, e.g. a doorbell ringing.

In all such related courses, a library book on playwriting, screenplay writing, Journalism, etc will fill in your gaps in this fascinating field of "plausible fantasy presentation".
