Question:

What driver and what shaft should I buy? L4V X, Nike Sumo 5000, or Ping G10?

I am 5'7" and my swing speed is right at about 100mph. I am a 15 handicap and feel I am ready and about to start breaking into the 70's. Which driver should I go with? If I buy the L4V X it has a Diamana red board shaft, I don't know what shaft the Ping G10 has but it has received great reviews. The Nike Sumo 5000 has 3 options: Diamana, Aldila NVS, or Proforce V2. Can anyone recommend a good pick and what else I should be looking for. I hit the ball fairly straight sometimes have a baby fade and average 290 yards. I just sold my Nike Ignite that I had the last 5 years so I need help on picking my next driver. Thanks.

  1. Get whatever feels right to you.  Personally I'm not a fan of any of those 3, however the Ping G10 is probably the most advanced out of all of them.  It has a Aldila NVS shaft.

I recommend trying the TaylorMade drivers.  A 2yr old r7 460 if you can find one, or the CGB, Superquad or Burner.  TaylorMade has probably the most popular drivers out right now.  I bought one and love it.

It's really all a personal thing though, whatever feels best to you.

...and yes, get a Stiff Flex and whatever loft you're comforatable with, probably a 9.5*-10.5*.

    Good luck.

  2. DON'T LISTEN TO THE ABOVE POSTER

You should NOT get an S-Flex.  That would indicate Senior.

You most definately need a STIFF Flex.  The two drivers I currently have in rotation of my bag have 2 of those shafts you talked about.  The proforce V2 and the Aldila NVS.  Personally I love my Aldila.  The NVS is nice and lite and makes it easy to just whip that driver around me.

The proforce is maybe just a step below the NVS in my eyes.  Seems to hit the ball a lot higher than my NVS which takes away yards.  Both are in Regular flex.

The L4V is a great driver, I've hit it and thought it was smooth and consistant.  But there's nothing wrong with either of the other two you mentioned either.

Sounds like you know what you want, now you just need to go and hit them and see which you like best.

  3. I have a Sumo with a pro force shaft .. and love it.

Now my swing speed isn't as high as yours , but my brother swings fast... and he loves the Sumo too...

My brother can smack a drive 300 yards without any effort

  4. which feels best to you?  I hear good things about the Nike and the Ping, but it's gotta feel right in your hands.  Go to a place like Golf Galaxy, Dunham's (they're redoing their golf section in a majority of stores, making it better) or your local pro shop.  Get fit (length, flex and lie) and try out as many models as you want.  You might even find something outside of those three that really works for you.

With your swing speed, you're gonna need a S-flex shaft, but again, get fit.  It doesn't matter what brand you get, unless you're good enough to know how the kick in the shaft truly operates.  If you do- you're way ahead of a LOT of golfers!

If you average 290, you are a god among men, since the average male golfer drives the ball 247.

By the way, if you drive it that far and you're a 15 handicap, have you looked at your irons and wedges?  Are they properly fit to you?  If you don't want to buy new irons along with a driver (that's a BIG investment at one time) you can always have your current set tweaked to fit you the way it's supposed to.  That might also shave a couple of strokes off your score, as well.  Good luck!
