  1. Certain non-green (usually low-intellect) people need a fat SUV or Hummer to show-off, to feel like a king on the road, or to actually carry stuff

Luckily GM and other makers are reducing their production and ramping up hi-MPG card and hybrids

  2. Big Americans, and no, they don't care about their own bodies so why would they care about the environment?

  3. The car companies really screwed up when they started making smaller cars with smaller back seats...If I had three young children 1 car seat and lets say two booster seats will not fit in the back so many young families , instead of buying sedans are forced to buy vans or suvs. All the car companies would have had to do was put intergrated child safety seats in those smaller back seats and they could of fit three across, ...The car companies knew gas prices were going up but many of the designers get so overpaid that they had no Idea how much those prices effect eveyone....They should have been designing hydred cars and alternative fuel cars...

This past week we just bought a pair of scooters to drive to work/ school. They get over a 140 miles per gallon and they are legal to drive on all the roads... We have already saved $80 in gas and it's only been since Wednesday..Of course they are fun to drive...

  4. People like big luxurious vehicles.

When we needed to reduce gas consumption before, the way that worked was fuel economy standards.

They haven't been upgraded in many years.  The Democrats made a move to do that, the car companies and unions made noises, and the Democrats ran away.  It would have been hard to get them past Bush, anyway.

Fixing this is one of the reasons I think Obama would be better than Clinton, who I think would be more likely to compromise.

  5. Cause they wanna live life fast. Fast food, fast cars, fast women, short life. And allot of it has to do with EGO. Old men wanting to relive their youth if not by viagra, with a corvette because without either one they would be S.O.L.  . Others its for the adrenaline rush.

  6. Ignorance.

Care is an irrelevant concept if you are ignorant.

  7. Demand.

If people are going to keep buying them, car companies are going to keep supplying them.

  8. Stupidity drives the need.   Throw in a hefty dose of poor automotive  industry executive management and you have the full recipe. Hence the reason Ford and GM are losing money hand over fist.  They are making big gas guzzling SUV's and trucks and losing billions every quarter as a result. They are not making the fuel effecient  cars that consumers want.

  9. Argh, me desire for my beautiful land yhat!

  10. Because we are humans God made us that way .We like a variety .Without a variety we would just be animals and be happy with being chained up and eating that same old dog food day after day . I don't think that's so hard to understand . All this gas shortage and global warming is all basically new to us and being that we are humans with the ability to think invent new ways that God gave us and i would like to say thank you Lord for that wonderful gift . Anyway as humans we will think of a way to get past this crisis because God gave us that gift and yes we do care we just don't all think about the same things at the same time but that's what makes us so great we have such a verity of thoughts and able to overcome anything because God gave that to us .

I think some should look at the good side . Everything isn't all doom and gloom .

  11. People are idiots.

  12. Demand!

People like big cars. Car companies try to make the cars as efficient as possible. They don't make them guzzle gas on purpose.

  13. comfort and large familys...   The rich too, who can afford the gas..

  14. The need for big trucks with powerful engines is still there no matter what, some guys just refuse to drive a minivan for a family car (I'm one of them) and choose to drive an SUV instead, some do not care at all or don't even give it a second thought, and some just love their fast cars. However, America is giving an effort. Car companies are working on alternative fuel vehicles and are now wind tunnel testing to maximize gas mileage. For example the new Cadillac Escalde ESV gets an estimated 23 mpg. It may seem like people don't care and some don't but you also can't expect a whole nation to become prius drivers in a day. It will take years no matter what.

  15. The American philosophy that bigger is better.

In the UK if someone where to say "I have a 5 liter car" People would say "WHAT!!"  in disbelief.

If you had to buy gas at the same prices as here in the UK you would soon dispose of your monster trucks (Approximately $7.50 per gallon)

  16. Demand.
