  3. I first heard that in the 70's.

    It was Qualudes, a legal sedative that was also used as an illegal recreational drug.  They had (and probably still have) the number written on each pill.  

    Guys I knew who used the drug (or bragged about it anyway, to be "cool") called it "flight 747")

    (I added a link to a previous Yahoo question on this.  There's some diversity of opinion on what number was imprinted on the pills.  It might have been "flight 714", but you get the idea)
