I am going to replace some existing trees with another type of tree. What edible fruit tree can I plant that either grows less than 6-7 feet, or that I can prune to about 6-7 feet that will survive in the Houston, Texas climate?

The weather is hot and humid during the summer with highs ranging between 90-95 F, though it can get up to 100 F.

Winter lows are around 30 (though it doesn't stay below freezing for more than a few hours), with average temperatues about 65 F.

  1. Squash, or oranges. Tasty! Orange trees smell AMAZING! Anything citrus is great. HAVE FUN!

  2. Citrus are probably best. Peaches are hard to grow there as they need more chilling hours  (below 40 degrees) than you usually get. Many orange trees are good down to 20 degrees. Japanese persimmons are also good although they do get a bit large.

  3. Probably any citrus fruit. Pears will do good.

Check with your county agent. He is in the blue pages. He can give you all the info you need for your area-thats what they are for.

  5. How about a grapevine?  The grapes grown in Italy are grafted onto the rootstock of native texas grapes.  That is, many varieties of grapes grow naturally in Texas.  That would be my suggestion.

  6. My favorite is a cherry tree.  Stands about 7 feet tall. Is 20 years old and our biggest problem is beating the birds to the fruit.
